You may have heard both of these words used for similar reasons, but what actually is the difference between plastering and rendering?
Both plastering and rendering refer to a construction process of applying a mortar coating to a wall which hardens as it dries.
When applied to external walls, such as the outside of your house, garage or garden wall, we call it rendering.
When any internal walls are coated, we call it plastering.
Render is mixed with a higher cement content in order to protect the external walls from the elements, whereas plaster is mixed with a smoother, thinner consistency, keeping curb appeal aesthetics in mind.
When is plastering and rendering used?
The purposes of both plastering and rendering are based on the same principle. Walls are made smoother, more uniform, and any minor cracks, dents or imperfections can be rectified.

What is plastering?
Plastering is an important part of both new home builds and renovations.
It is the next step after walls are built with brick and plasterboard, and any wiring and piping has been installed.
You may opt to plaster one wall alone, a whole room or even an entire house.
Before plastering, rooms need to be clear of furniture and fittings in order for the plasterer to have the clearest access. Plaster will be mixed in a way that gives you the smoothest and most even finish.
A plastered wall provides a clean, unblemished surface for decoration and creates a blank, uniform canvas throughout a property. You are then able to paint and decorate your walls and ceilings without any pesky cracks, holes or blemishes spoiling the finished look.
Plaster may also help to protect damper areas such as bathrooms and kitchens from potential issues with mould and condensation. It provides a flat surface ready for tiling. It can aid with sound proofing, particularly when plasterboards are used. This is a particularly popular choice for multi-dwelling properties.

What is rendering?
Render plays an important job in weather-proofing the external walls. It aids in protecting the walls from damp and condensation, and helps to decrease the amount of heat that may escape from brick walls alone.
Rendering is a popular choice among new builds and ‘face-lifts’ for older properties.
Modern renders are now available in a range of pre-mixed colours, removing the need for the added expense of painting the outside of your property when dry.
You can opt for a pebble-dash or brick effect finish if desired.
You may choose to render just the front of your property to create that ‘wow factor’ from the street, or you may wish to have the whole of the exterior rendered to create the ultimate consistent aesthetic.
Rendering can also be used as a smart, durable finish for brick garden walls.
