Yes…you can, but most plasterers would recommend that you don’t plaster over tiles.
If your tiled wall area is large but your budget or timescale (or both) is small then you may be tempted to plaster directly over the tiles during your redecoration project.

It is true that it is not impossible to do this, but it may not result in long-lasting and effective results.
What’s the problem with plastering over tiles?
The actual plastering part is as straightforward as any other, the plaster would be applied in the same way and would smooth out any joins and ridges between each tile. It is the preparation and application that provides the problems.
The issue lies with the fact that plaster is designed to bond and stick to a traditional wall surface. The grain and consistency of the underlying wall or plasterboard allows the plaster to stick well to the wall as it dries out after being applied in coats.
A smooth, non-porous tile does not provide the same base and makes for a much less effective base to work with. The resulting finished plaster may be weak and prone to cracks and flakes.
If the plastered walls need to be drilled into in the future it can be particularly difficult to do if the plaster is covering tiles.
Drilling this type of wall will result in a higher chance of cracks and imperfections as the tiles underneath crack.
What can I do instead of plastering?
If you are unhappy with the state of your tiled walls, you do have options to improve the way they look without embarking on a big project.
You may consider tile stickers, painting over your tiles or covering them with wall panels. All of these options will provide a new, fresh look to your wall surface without the need to remove or plaster over your tiles.
Alternatively, if your tiles are slipping, cracked and altogether in desperate need of a full-facelift, it may be sensible to remove them altogether and start again.
You will then be able to determine whether a full replaster is needed or a simple skim coat before redecorating can begin. Want to know how much painting and decorating typically costs? Then head over to our cost guide for painters and decorators.
